[Software] KDE Plasma 6.8 Is Here: X11 Sessions Are Gone, What Changes for You

Quick answer: KDE Plasma 6.8 came out on October 14,
2026, and it’s the first Plasma release with no X11 login session. It
runs on Wayland only, and older X11 apps run through XWayland. If you
already use the Wayland session (most Plasma users do), upgrade when
your distro ships it. You get built-in dwell clicking, a much better
remote desktop, audio in screen recordings, and triple buffering by
default on NVIDIA. If you still log into “Plasma (X11)” every day, test
Wayland first. Plasma 6.7 keeps X11 support until its last bug-fix
release, which is scheduled for January 2027.

Plasma 6.8 launched on KDE’s 30th birthday. KDE called it the “30th
Anniversary Edition” and calls the X11 change part of “launching Plasma
into the future.” Below, we cover what’s new, what the X11 retirement
actually means, which distros have 6.8 today, and what to do if you’re
not ready. Every version and date here was checked on October
24, 2026
.

Dates come from KDE’s official Plasma 6 release schedule. Bug-fix
dates are tarball dates and can shift.

Specs and key facts

  • Release date: Plasma 6.8.0 shipped
    Wednesday, October 14, 2026. That’s unusual, since
Plasma normally lands on a Tuesday. KDE moved it to match the project’s
    30th anniversary.
  • Current version: Plasma 6.8.1,
    released October 20, 2026. It’s the first bug-fix
update. Phoronix highlights a possible crash fix in KWin, several
Wayland fixes, and a multi-GPU workaround for NVIDIA.
  • Next updates: 6.8.2 (October 27), 6.8.3 (November
    10), 6.8.4 (December 1), 6.8.5 (January 5, 2027), and the final 6.8.6
    (March 16, 2027).
  • Dependencies: Qt 6.11 and KDE Frameworks 6.30, per
    KDE’s schedule.
  • Session: Wayland only. Distros no longer get a KWin
X11 build from Plasma 6.8. Gentoo’s packaging news lists
kwin-x11 among the packages discontinued in 6.8.
  • Next feature release: Plasma 6.9 is scheduled for
    February 23, 2027.

Who should upgrade (and
who should wait)

Upgrade now if:

  • You already use the Plasma Wayland session. For
you, the X11 change is invisible, and the rest of 6.8 is pure
    upside.
  • You’re on a rolling distro. Arch, openSUSE
Tumbleweed and KDE neon already ship it (see below).
  • You use an NVIDIA GPU on Wayland. Triple buffering
is now on by default in KWin, and 6.8.1 adds a multi-GPU fix for
    NVIDIA.
  • You use Plasma’s remote desktop, or you record your
    screen.
These two areas got some of the biggest upgrades in
    this release.

Wait or stay on 6.7 if:

  • You rely on the Plasma X11 session for a tool that
breaks under Wayland. Common examples are older screen-sharing,
automation or input tools. Test the Wayland session first.
  • You’re on a fixed-release distro. Don’t add
unofficial repos just to get 6.8. Your distro’s next release will bring
    it.
  • You need a stable desktop for work this week. A x.0
release is still settling. The 6.8.2 and 6.8.3 updates come within three
    weeks.

The big change:
Plasma’s X11 session is retired

KDE announced this in November 2025 in a blog post called “Going
all-in on a Wayland future.” Plasma 6.8 is the release where it happens.
Here’s what it does and doesn’t mean.

What goes away: the “Plasma (X11)”
entry at the login screen. Starting with 6.8, Plasma itself only runs as
a Wayland session.

What still works:

  • X11 apps. Apps that still need X11 keep running
through XWayland. KDE says this works “outside of rare
special cases.” It also adds extra compatibility on top, including
better fractional scaling for X11 apps and opt-in support for X11-style
    global shortcuts and input emulation.
  • KDE apps on other desktops. KDE says its apps
(Dolphin, Kate, Konsole and so on) “will continue to support X11 for the
foreseeable future.” So you can still run them in an X11 window manager
like i3 or Openbox, or in Xfce.
  • Some special cases may need app updates. KDE notes
that third-party apps doing screenshots or screencasting sometimes need
changes to work properly on Wayland. Most have already made them.

Why KDE did it: In Plasma 6.4, KDE split KWin into
separate X11 and Wayland builds. That helped, but the rest of the
desktop still had to support the “lowest common denominator” of both
window systems. Dropping the X11 session lets developers build
Wayland-only features faster. KDE also said most of its users were
already on Wayland, which is the default on most distros.

How long X11 support lasts: Plasma 6.7 is the last
release with an X11 session. KDE’s schedule gives it an extra bug-fix
release, 6.7.7, on January 19, 2027. The schedule notes
that this release “marks the termination of support for the X11 window
manager.” After that, KDE suggests long-term support distros for people
who still need X11. Its example is AlmaLinux 9, which includes the
Plasma X11 session and is supported until 2032.

How to check which session you’re on: open Konsole
and run echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE. If it prints
wayland, nothing changes for you. If it prints
x11, log out, pick the Plasma (Wayland) session at the
login screen, and use it for a few days before you upgrade.

What else is new in Plasma
6.8

Accessibility and language
support

  • Dwell clicker: Plasma can now send a mouse click
when the pointer stops moving. It’s built in, so people with limited
mobility no longer need a separate app.
  • Bikram Sambat calendar support in the Digital
Clock, and Amharic in the on-screen keyboard.

Remote desktop

KDE says it put a lot of work into Plasma’s built-in RDP server:

  • Better performance and quality. It now prioritizes
low latency and adapts to slow networks and fast-changing screen
    content.
  • Exclusive mode. This optionally locks the host’s
screen and gives the client a virtual screen that matches its window
    size.
  • Two-way clipboard sync between the host and the
    client.

KDE notes that these only work with remote desktop clients that
support them.

Screen recording and screen
sharing

  • Spectacle can now record system audio and
    microphone input
at the same time, so you can narrate a screen
    recording.
  • The screen-sharing portal can already create a virtual screen to
share. Now you can pick its resolution, instead of being stuck at 1920 ×
    1080.
  • KDE says recording and screencast quality has improved too.

System Monitor

  • CPU pinning: you can now assign heavy tasks to
specific CPU cores directly from System Monitor.
  • VRAM use now shows as a percentage.

Graphics, HDR and performance

  • NVIDIA GPUs use triple buffering by default in
    KWin.
  • Better-looking HDR for anyone using an ICC color
    profile.
  • HLG transfer function support. Some media and apps
that didn’t work in HDR before now do.
  • Lower resource use. KDE says Plasma loads faster
and uses less memory, and the Discover update notifier uses less memory
    too. KDE hasn’t published numbers.

Nicer windows for
third-party apps

New window rules can add shadows, outlines and rounded corners to
apps that draw their own title bars (client-side decorations) but can’t
add those effects themselves. Plasma 6.8 includes one of these rules for
Steam, so it fits in better with the rest of the
desktop.

Theming: Union reaches beta

Union is KDE’s new theming system. It arrived as an
alpha in Plasma 6.7 and is now a beta. It can style
both Qt Quick apps and traditional Qt Widgets apps such as Dolphin, Kate
and Konsole. It isn’t the default yet. To try it, install the
union package (the name varies by distro). Then go to
System Settings → Colors & Themes → Application
Style
, pick Breeze (Union), and restart your
apps. KDE says apps should look “nearly identical” to regular
Breeze.

Smaller changes worth
knowing

  • kscreenctl, a new command-line tool
for managing displays, which you can use in scripts.
  • Kup, KDE’s backup tool, is now released as part of
    Plasma.
  • New Meta + Ctrl + Page Up/Page Down shortcuts
switch to the previous or next task in the Task Manager. Add
Shift to move the active task left or right.
  • Autostart apps can now be turned on and off without
    deleting their entries.
  • EAP-TTLS authentication for strongSwan VPNs.
  • In Display Configuration, the arrow keys now move screens one pixel
    at a time.
  • Emojis in the Emoji Selector can be shown at different sizes.
  • You get a warning when you try to print to a printer that’s
    unavailable.

Gentoo 6.8 on testing keywords Plasma 6.7 stays available until at least Jan 31, 2027

A few notes:

  • Fedora: Fedora’s KDE packager said on October 10
that Plasma 6.8 can’t go into Fedora 44 or 45 until the final freeze
ends and Fedora 45 ships. On October 14, Plasma 6.8 was published in the
Copr. He warned that a library change (a libplasma soname bump) means
some apps may need to be uninstalled first, including Merkuro, KWeather,
KClock and KAlgebra. To return to the official packages, he suggests
dnf copr disable @kdesig/kde-final followed by
dnf distro-sync. Fedora 45 was delayed again on October 22.
One of the listed blockers involves KDE’s Discover installing outdated
packages from the Fedora 44 repo.
  • Kubuntu: Kubuntu 26.10 doesn’t ship 6.8. We
couldn’t find an official Kubuntu Backports announcement for Plasma 6.8
as of today, so don’t assume one is coming soon.
  • Just want to try it? KDE links to live images (KDE
neon, Tumbleweed and others) and Docker images from the 6.8
announcement. Booting from a USB stick is the safest way to check your
    hardware before you upgrade.

Linux distros in October 2026
guide compares the main options. If
your machine is older, see lightweight
distros for old PCs and laptops
.

How to upgrade

  1. Check your session with
echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE (see above). If you’re on X11,
switch to Wayland and use it for a while first.
  2. Back up. Use Kup or your usual tool, or take a
Btrfs/Snapper snapshot on Tumbleweed or Fedora.
  3. Update normally.
    • Arch: sudo pacman -Syu
    • openSUSE Tumbleweed:
      sudo zypper dup
    • KDE neon: use Discover, or run
      sudo pkcon update
  4. Log out and back in (or reboot). Then open
System Settings → About this System to confirm the
    Plasma version.
  5. If something breaks, report it on KDE’s Bugzilla.
If it’s a Wayland-only problem, include your GPU and driver
    version.

Should you stay on X11?
Your options

If Wayland doesn’t work for you yet, you have four realistic
choices:

  1. Hold Plasma at 6.7 on your distro until early 2027.
Gentoo documents how to mask the 6.8 upgrade. On other distros, this
means pinning or holding packages, which can cause problems on rolling
    distros.
  2. Use an LTS distro that still ships an X11-capable
Plasma. KDE itself points to AlmaLinux 9, supported until 2032.
  3. Keep KDE apps and switch desktops. KDE apps keep
supporting X11, so you can pair them with an X11 desktop or window
    manager.
  4. Report what breaks. KDE says late feedback may
still lead to fixes in Plasma 6.9 (due February 2027). Kubuntu’s team is
also asking X11 users to test Wayland now and report problems.

Caveats and what isn’t
finished

  • It’s still a x.0 series. A user on the Fedora
discussion thread mentioned an annoying bug that was also being reported
by Arch users, and hoped a fix would land in 6.8.1 or 6.8.2. Expect a
    few weeks of polish.
  • Union is beta. KDE says it isn’t ready to be the
    default.
  • Remote desktop features need client support.
Exclusive mode and clipboard sync only work with clients that implement
    them.
  • No official performance numbers. KDE says Plasma
loads faster and uses less memory but hasn’t published figures. We
    haven’t benchmarked it ourselves.
  • Kup’s versioned backups use the bup
backend. One Fedora Copr user noted that bup wasn’t in Fedora’s repos
yet, so check that your distro packages it.

FAQ

When was KDE Plasma 6.8
released?

Plasma 6.8.0 was released on October 14, 2026, which is KDE’s 30th
anniversary. The first bug-fix release, 6.8.1, followed on October 20,
2026.

Does Plasma 6.8 still support
X11?

Not as a login session. Plasma 6.8 runs only on Wayland. X11 apps
still run through XWayland, and KDE apps still support X11 when you run
them on other desktops.

Will my old X11
apps still work in Plasma 6.8?

In most cases, yes, through XWayland. KDE says only “rare special
cases” fail. These are mostly third-party tools that take screenshots,
capture the screen, or emulate input, and that haven’t been updated for
Wayland yet.

How long is Plasma 6.7
supported?

KDE’s schedule ends the 6.7 series with 6.7.7 on January 19, 2027, an
extra release beyond the usual cycle. The schedule says this release
marks the end of support for the X11 window manager.

Does Kubuntu 26.10 ship
Plasma 6.8?

No. Kubuntu 26.10 (released October 15, 2026) ships Plasma 6.7.5.
Kubuntu 26.04 LTS ships Plasma 6.6, KDE’s current LTS release.

How do I get Plasma 6.8 on
Fedora?

Until Fedora 45 is released (now targeted for November 3, 2026 at the
earliest), the only route is the Fedora KDE SIG’s
@kdesig/kde-final Copr. Most people should wait for the
official update.

What is KDE’s Union theme
engine?

Union is KDE’s new theming system. It’s meant to become a single
source of styling for both Qt Quick and Qt Widgets apps. It’s in beta in
Plasma 6.8, and you can try it by choosing “Breeze (Union)” under
Application Style.
