Quick answer: For most old laptops with 2 GB of RAM
or more and a 64-bit CPU, start with MX Linux 25.3
(Xfce) or Xubuntu 26.04 LTS. Both are current,
well supported, and include a full set of daily apps. If your machine is
truly ancient, or 32-bit only, antiX 26.1 is the best
maintained option, with Puppy Linux and
Q4OS as alternatives. Avoid distros that haven’t
shipped a new release in years, and expect a 32-bit PC to be a hobby
machine rather than a daily driver in 2026.
Below are the best lightweight Linux distros for old laptops and
desktops that are still actively maintained. For each one we list the
current version, the minimum specs from the project’s own
documentation, and the software you get for email, browsing,
writing and spreadsheets. Everything was checked against official sites
on October 22, 2026. Where a project doesn’t publish a
requirement, we say so instead of guessing.

Linux distros in October 2026.

notes
Who it’s for: Tinkerers with Pentium 4-era laptops,
netbooks or 32-bit-only hardware, plus anyone who likes a fast live USB
with persistence. Not for: People who want a modern,
polished desktop out of the box. The window-manager setup takes some
getting used to.
2.
MX Linux 25.3 (Xfce or Fluxbox): best all-rounder for older 64-bit
PCs
- Version: MX-25.3 “Infinity”, announced September
20, 2026 - Base: Debian 13 “trixie” (systemd and sysvinit are
both on the ISO) - Desktop: Xfce, Fluxbox or KDE Plasma. Fluxbox is
the lightest - 32-bit: No. MX-25 is 64-bit only. MX-23 remains
supported for 32-bit users, and Debian’s LTS support for it should last
until June 2028 - Minimum specs (official manual): a modern x86
64-bit Intel or AMD CPU, 1 GB RAM and 20 GB free disk space.
Recommended: 2 GB RAM or more and at least 35 GB. The installed system
takes a little under 12 GB. - Daily software:
- Email: Thunderbird (installed by default)
- Web: Firefox
- Writing, spreadsheets: LibreOffice (Writer, Calc, Impress and
more) - PDF: QPDFview
- Media: VLC (video), Strawberry (music)
- Files: Thunar on Xfce
- Photos: nomacs viewer, basic GIMP
- Also: MX Tools, including the Package Installer and snapshot/live
USB tools
Who it’s for: Almost anyone with a 64-bit laptop
from roughly the last 15 years. Not for: 32-bit
machines, or PCs with less than 1 GB of RAM (choose antiX instead).
3.
Linux Lite 8.0: easiest switch from Windows (if you have 4 GB)
- Version: Linux Lite 8.0, released June 1, 2026. 8.2
is in release-candidate testing and due November 1, 2026 - Base: Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. The 8.x series is supported
until June 2031 - Desktop: Xfce
- 32-bit: No
- Minimum specs (official): 1.5 GHz dual-core CPU, 4
GB RAM, 40 GB HDD/SSD/NVMe and a 1366×768 display. Secure Boot must be
disabled. - Daily software (official list):
- Email: Thunderbird
- Web: Firefox
- Writing, spreadsheets: LibreOffice
- Media: VLC
- Files: Thunar
- Photos: GIMP
- PDF: not listed on the official page
- Also: Timeshift backup and restore
Who it’s for: Beginners moving off Windows 10 on a
laptop that still has 4 GB of RAM. Not for: Really
low-end machines. Its official minimums are higher than most distros
here.
4. Linux Mint
22.3 Xfce: the familiar, safe choice
- Version: Linux Mint 22.3 “Zena”, released January
13, 2026, supported until April 2029 - Base: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
- Desktop: Xfce (Mint calls it its most lightweight
edition) - 32-bit: No. Only 64-bit since Mint 20
- Minimum specs (official): CPU not stated (64-bit
required). 2 GB RAM (4 GB recommended), 20 GB disk (100 GB recommended),
1024×768 display. - Daily software: Thunderbird (email), Firefox (web),
LibreOffice (writing, spreadsheets), Xreader (PDF), Celluloid and
Rhythmbox (media), Thunar (files), Pix (photos)
Who it’s for: Anyone who wants Mint’s polish and
huge community on a mid-2010s laptop. Not for: Very old
hardware. 2 GB is the official floor. Note: Mint 22.3 ships the HWE 6.14
kernel, and the release notes warn it doesn’t work with old NVIDIA cards
that need the 470 driver. Install 22.1 first if that’s you.
5. Xubuntu
26.04 LTS: best balance of light and complete
- Version: 26.04 LTS (April 2026) and 26.10 “Stonking
Stingray” (October 15, 2026, supported until July 2027) - Base: Ubuntu
- Desktop: Xfce 4.20
- 32-bit: No. 64-bit (plus experimental RISC-V
Minimal images) - Minimum specs (official): 64-bit Intel or AMD CPU,
1 GB RAM and 8.6 GB free disk space. Recommended: 1.5 GHz dual-core CPU,
2 GB RAM and 20 GB disk. - Daily software (26.04 desktop image):
- Email: Thunderbird (snap)
- Web: Firefox (snap)
- Writing, spreadsheets: LibreOffice Writer, Calc and Impress
- PDF: Atril
- Media: Parole (video), Rhythmbox (music)
- Files: Thunar
- Photos: Ristretto viewer, GIMP
- Also: Simple Scan, Transmission, Xfburn. A Minimal
ISO is available if you’d rather add apps yourself
Who it’s for: People who want Ubuntu’s ecosystem
without GNOME’s weight. Pick the LTS for an old laptop. Not
for: 32-bit PCs, or anyone who dislikes snaps.
6. Lubuntu
26.04 LTS: lightest official Ubuntu flavor
- Version: 26.04 LTS (April 23, 2026) and 26.10
(October 15, 2026, LXQt 2.4, supported until July 2027) - Base: Ubuntu
- Desktop: LXQt
- 32-bit: No. AMD64 only
- Minimum specs (official): AMD64-class CPU (the
download page gives Athlon64 and Core 2 as examples); at least 1 GB
(1024 MiB) of RAM to install. Disk space: not stated officially. The ISO
itself is 3.6 GB. - Daily software (26.04 desktop image):
- Email: none installed by default
- Web: Firefox (snap)
- Writing, spreadsheets: LibreOffice Writer, Calc and Impress
- PDF: qpdfview
- Media: VLC
- Files: PCManFM-Qt
- Photos: LXImage-Qt
- Also: FeatherPad, Discover software center, Transmission,
Skanlite
Who it’s for: Qt fans and anyone who wants the
lightest Ubuntu flavor. Not for: People who expect an
email app out of the box. Install Thunderbird from Discover.
7. Debian 13 with LXQt:
lean and rock-solid
- Version: Debian 13.7 “trixie”, released September
12, 2026. Full support until August 9, 2028, then LTS until June 30,
2030 - Desktop: LXQt, chosen in the installer (or use the
LXQt live ISO) - 32-bit: No new installs. i386 is now only a
co-architecture for running 32-bit software on 64-bit systems - Minimum specs (official install guide): a 1 GHz
Pentium 4 is the minimum recommended for a desktop; with a desktop, 1 GB
RAM minimum (2 GB recommended) and 10 GB of disk. The guide itself
suggests lighter desktops such as Xfce for old hardware. - Daily software (13.7 LXQt live image):
- Email: Thunderbird
- Web: Firefox ESR
- Writing, spreadsheets: LibreOffice Writer, Calc and Impress
- PDF: qpdfview
- Media: SMPlayer, mpv
- Files: PCManFM-Qt
- Photos: LXImage-Qt
Who it’s for: Hobbyists who want a plain, stable
base and five years of support. Not for: Beginners who
want guided setup tools.
8. Q4OS 6.10
“Andromeda” (Trinity): Windows-style and tiny
- Version: Q4OS 6.10, posted October 8, 2026. The
“Andromeda” LTS is supported until at least August 2030 - Base: Debian 13
- Desktop: Trinity (very light, classic) or KDE
Plasma - 32-bit: Yes, via the older Q4OS 5 “Aquarius”
Trinity install CD, supported until at least June 2028 - Minimum specs (official): Trinity needs a 500 MHz
CPU, 512 MB RAM and 6 GB disk. Plasma needs 1 GHz, 2 GB RAM and 8 GB.
Q4OS suggests the install-cd ISO for older machines. - Daily software: depends on the install profile you
pick. A February 2026 FOSS Force review of the full Desktop profile
found Chromium (web), Thunderbird (email), LibreOffice (writing,
spreadsheets) and VLC and Strawberry (media). The “Pure” profile
installs almost nothing, so you add apps with the Software Centre or
Desktop Profiler.
Who it’s for: Old Windows XP/7-era PCs and users who
want a familiar taskbar-and-start-menu layout. Not for:
People who want a modern-looking desktop on low-end hardware (Plasma
needs 2 GB).
9.
BunsenLabs Carbon: Openbox minimalism for tinkerers
- Version: BunsenLabs Carbon (current ISO:
carbon-1-260211, built February 11, 2026; release notes posted January
26, 2026) - Base: Debian 13
- Desktop: Openbox with an xfce4-panel, jgmenu and
Conky. Carbon can also run Wayland sessions (labwc) - 32-bit: No. 32-bit users should stay on BL Boron,
supported until June 2028 - Minimum specs (official): CPU not stated. RAM: 1 GB
minimum, 2 GB recommended. Disk: 20 GB recommended; a live-ISO install
uses about 2.1 GB - Daily software: Firefox ESR (web) and Thunar
(files). Email, office, PDF and media defaults aren’t listed on the
official site; add Thunderbird, LibreOffice and VLC from Debian’s repos
with apt.
Who it’s for: Keyboard-driven tinkerers who like a
dark, minimal desktop. Not for: Anyone who wants
support guarantees. The project calls itself a hobby distro with no
warranty or guaranteed updates. Its compositor (picom) also needs
OpenGL, so turn compositing off on very old GPUs.
10.
Puppy Linux (TrixiePup): runs from RAM on almost anything
- Version: Puppy is a family of builds. The current
Debian 13-based releases are TrixiePup64-Wayland (2510 ISO),
TrixiePup64-Retro (2509) and TrixiePup32-Retro (2508). The official
ibiblio page was updated August 1, 2026, and builds were refreshed in
October 2026 - Desktop: Labwc (Wayland) with SFWbar, or JWM with
ROX-Filer (Retro) - 32-bit: Yes (TrixiePup32-Retro, BookwormPup32,
NoblePup32) - Minimum specs (official forum guide): 64-bit Puppy
needs a 64-bit dual-core CPU and 1 GB RAM; 32-bit Puppy needs a
single-core Pentium 4 (or equivalent) and 512 MB. Storage: 1 GB to
install, 2 GB or more as you add software - Daily software: Firefox ESR (web; Pale Moon on
32-bit), SpaceFM/Xfe or ROX-Filer (files). The rest varies by build.
LibreOffice and an email client aren’t part of the base image; add them
with APT/Synaptic or as portable apps.
Who it’s for: Reviving machines with tiny drives, or
carrying your desktop on a USB stick. Not for: People
who want a conventional multi-user install. Puppy’s design is
unusual.
11. Peppermint OS: a blank
Xfce slate
- Version: No version numbers. Peppermint publishes
rolling ISOs built on Debian 13 “trixie” and Devuan “excalibur”. A
Devuan build was released June 12, 2026, and the team was still posting
testing updates in October 2026 - Desktop: Xfce with Thunar
- 32-bit: No. Current Trixie/Excalibur builds are
64-bit only - Minimum specs: CPU, RAM and disk are not stated
officially - Daily software: Very little by design. You choose a
browser and apps from the Welcome screen’s community-voted
Suggested Packages list, which covers the browsers in
Debian’s repos, including Firefox ESR and Chromium. Thunar is the only
file manager installed by default.
Who it’s for: Users who want to build a lean Xfce
system themselves. Not for: Anyone who wants a
ready-to-use desktop on first boot.
Proceed with caution: Bodhi
Linux
Bodhi Linux 7.0.0 (Moksha desktop, Ubuntu 22.04 LTS
base) is still the download on the official site, but it dates from
2023, and the newest blog post we found is from July 2025. Bodhi 8 has
been previewed but not released. Official specs: 500 MHz CPU, 512 MB RAM
and 5 GB disk minimum (1.0 GHz 64-bit, 768 MB and 10 GB recommended).
The Standard edition ships Chromium, Thunar and Leafpad, and the AppPack
adds GIMP and Sylpheed email. 32-bit users get only the old 5.1.0 Legacy
ISO with a non-updating 4.9 kernel. Because Ubuntu 22.04’s standard
support ends in 2027, we don’t recommend new installs until Bodhi 8
ships.
How to pick
- 32-bit CPU only: antiX 26.1, Puppy
(TrixiePup32-Retro), or Q4OS 5 “Aquarius”. That’s about it now that
Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, MX and BunsenLabs have dropped 32-bit
installs. - 64-bit, 1 to 2 GB RAM: antiX 64-bit, MX Fluxbox,
Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Debian with LXQt, or Q4OS Trinity. - 64-bit, 2 to 4 GB RAM: MX Xfce, Xubuntu, or Linux
Mint Xfce. - 4 GB+ and new to Linux: Linux Lite or Linux Mint
Xfce. - Want to build it yourself: BunsenLabs or
Peppermint.
To check your CPU from any Linux live USB, run lscpu and
look for “64-bit” in the CPU op-mode line. Run free -h to
see your RAM.
Install tips and caveats
Browsers are the real bottleneck. On an old PC, the
desktop is rarely what feels slow. Modern websites are. Mozilla
announced in September 2025 that 32-bit Linux support would end in 2026,
and Firefox ESR 140, the last branch with 32-bit Linux builds, reached
end of life on September 29, 2026. Google stopped making 32-bit Chrome
for Linux years ago. So on 32-bit hardware, plan on lighter browsers
(Puppy’s 32-bit build uses Pale Moon) and keep risky browsing to a
minimum.
A cheap SSD is the best upgrade. Swapping a spinning
hard drive for a SATA SSD usually helps an old laptop more than any
distro change. Boot, app launch and updates all speed up. If the laptop
has a free slot, going from 2 GB to 4 GB or more of RAM is the
second-best upgrade. Used DDR3 sticks cost very little.
A common pick is the Samsung 870 EVO 500GB SATA SSD: Check price on Amazon (paid link)
Try it live first. Every distro here boots as a live
system. Check Wi-Fi, sound, suspend and the trackpad before you install.
antiX and MX can also save your settings to the USB stick
(persistence).
Old graphics and Secure Boot. Linux Lite requires
Secure Boot to be disabled. BunsenLabs’ compositor needs OpenGL, and
Mint 22.3’s newer kernel doesn’t support NVIDIA’s legacy 470 driver. If
a distro shows a black screen, try a different ISO (MX offers both
standard and “AHS” images) or turn off the compositor.
Use swap or zram on low-RAM machines. antiX’s 256 MB
figure assumes swap is configured, and Debian’s minimums also assume
swap is enabled.
FAQ
What’s the lightest Linux distro that’s still maintained in
2026? Among the distros here, antiX 26.1 has the lowest
official floor: 256 MB of RAM with swap and a 7 GB install. It also
still ships 32-bit ISOs.
Can I still run Linux on a 32-bit laptop? Yes, with
antiX, Puppy’s 32-bit builds or Q4OS 5 “Aquarius”. Mainstream browsers
have dropped 32-bit Linux, though, so treat it as a light-duty or
offline machine.
Which lightweight distro is best for a beginner?
Linux Mint Xfce or Linux Lite if you have 4 GB of RAM, and Xubuntu or MX
Linux if you have 2 GB. All four come with Firefox, Thunderbird and
LibreOffice installed.
How much RAM do I really need? Official minimums
range from 256 MB (antiX) to 4 GB (Linux Lite). For web browsing in
2026, 4 GB is a comfortable target, and 2 GB works if you keep tabs
under control.
Do these distros include an office suite?
antiX-full, MX, Linux Lite, Mint, Xubuntu, Lubuntu and Debian’s LXQt
live image all include LibreOffice. Q4OS includes it with the full
Desktop profile. BunsenLabs, Puppy, Peppermint and Bodhi leave it for
you to install.
Is Bodhi Linux dead? Not officially, but 7.0.0 is
from 2023 and Bodhi 8 hasn’t shipped. We’d hold off on new installs.
