[Hardware] Best Handheld Gaming PC for Late 2026: ROG Xbox Ally X20 vs Legion Go 2 vs Steam Deck

Picking the best handheld gaming PC 2026 has to offer got harder this
month. ASUS started selling the ROG Xbox Ally X20 on October 15, and
both versions sold out within days. Lenovo’s SteamOS version of the
Legion Go 2 still says “Coming Soon” on its US site, months after its
June target. And the Steam Deck OLED now costs much more than it used
to, after a big price increase in May.

Quick answer: If you want the most polished Windows
handheld and can find one in stock, the ROG Xbox Ally
X20
($1,299) is the new high end, with a 7.4-inch OLED screen
and an 80Wh battery in a 756 g body. If your games are mostly on Steam
and you want the most mature, best-supported experience, the
Steam Deck OLED ($789 for 512GB) is still the safe
choice, even at its higher price. The Legion Go 2 has
the biggest screen and detachable controllers, but the SteamOS model
isn’t on sale in the US yet and Windows pricing has climbed steeply, so
most people should wait on it.

Every price, spec and date below was checked against official ASUS,
Lenovo and Valve pages, or reputable reports where noted, on
October 21, 2026. Prices are US list prices unless
stated otherwise.

The contenders

ROG Xbox Ally X20:
the new Windows flagship

  • Price: $1,299.99 at the ASUS Store. A bundle with
the ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 AR glasses, a custom dbrand Killswitch case
and a Pelican case costs $2,499.
  • Released: October 15, 2026
  • OS: Windows 11 Home
  • Chip: AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme (8 cores, 16 threads,
up to 5.0GHz, NPU up to 50 TOPS)
  • Memory and storage: 24GB LPDDR5X, 1TB PCIe 4.0 M.2
    2280 SSD
  • Screen: 7.4-inch 1920×1080 OLED, 120Hz, FreeSync
Premium Pro, Dolby Vision HDR, Gorilla Glass Victus with an
    anti-reflection coating
  • Battery and weight: 80Wh, 756 g (1.67 lb)

The X20 is ASUS’s 20th-anniversary edition of the ROG Xbox Ally X,
with a translucent black shell and gold-colored internal frame. The chip
and 24GB of memory match last year’s Ally X, so don’t expect a big jump
in raw performance. The upgrades are elsewhere: a larger OLED screen in
place of the 7-inch IPS panel, a redesigned cooling system that ASUS
says moves 20% more air, TMR joysticks designed to reduce stick drift, a
transforming D-pad that switches between four-way and eight-way
movement, and a microSD Express card reader.

Ports are one USB4 Type-C (Thunderbolt 4 compliant, DisplayPort 2.1)
plus one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C. Wireless is Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4.
ASUS also updated its Armoury Crate SE software, adding a Travel Mode
that limits charging to 65W for seat-back power outlets on planes and
trains.

Windows Central reports that the X20’s panel reaches 1,400 nits peak
in HDR. ASUS’s US spec page doesn’t list a brightness figure, so treat
that number as reported, not official.

The catch: stock. Windows Central reported on
October 20 that the standalone handheld and the $2,499 bundle had sold
out at both ASUS and Best Buy, and the ASUS eShop listing showed “Out of
stock” when we checked. ASUS hasn’t announced a restock date.

Standout: The best screen ASUS has put in a
handheld, in a body that’s still lighter than the Legion Go 2.

Legion Go
2: biggest screen, messiest buying situation

  • SteamOS model price: Announced at CES 2026 from
    $1,199 (Ryzen Z2, 16GB, 512GB, per The Verge). Lenovo hasn’t announced
Z2 Extreme pricing for the SteamOS model.
  • SteamOS model availability: Lenovo’s US Legion page
still lists “Legion Go Powered by SteamOS Gen 2 (8.8″)” as
Coming Soon as of October 21, 2026. The June 2026
target passed without a US launch.
  • Windows model: On sale. Notebookcheck reported on
    October 13 that Lenovo.com lists the Z2 Extreme / 2TB configuration at
$3,081.99, after several price increases since launch.
  • Chip: Up to AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme
  • Memory and storage: Up to 32GB LPDDR5X-8000, up to
    2TB M.2 2242 SSD, plus microSD
  • Screen: 8.8-inch 1920×1200 (16:10) OLED, 144Hz,
    VRR, up to 500 nits
  • Battery and weight: 74Wh, about 920 g with
    controllers

The Legion Go 2 is the most flexible handheld here. Its TrueStrike
controllers detach like a Nintendo Switch’s, there’s a built-in
kickstand, and the right controller works as a mouse in FPS mode. The
8.8-inch, 16:10 OLED screen is the largest and sharpest in this
comparison.

The SteamOS version uses the same hardware with Valve’s OS in place
of Windows. That gets you a console-like interface, quick suspend and
resume, and a dedicated Steam button. You lose some things too: Lenovo’s
Legion Space app is Windows-only, and Windows Central notes that SteamOS
doesn’t support the fingerprint reader. Valve has been adding Legion Go
2 support to SteamOS through 2026, so you can also install SteamOS (or a
gaming distro like Bazzite) on the Windows model yourself, but that’s an
enthusiast project without Lenovo support.

The catch: price and availability. The SteamOS model
you’d most want can’t be ordered in the US yet, and current Windows
prices are far above launch prices because of ongoing memory and storage
cost increases across the industry.

Standout: Detachable controllers and an 8.8-inch
OLED screen, a combination nobody else here offers.

Steam Deck OLED: the safe
SteamOS pick

  • Price: $789 (512GB) and $949 (1TB), as listed on
    steamdeck.com on October 21, 2026
  • Regional prices (from Valve’s May 27 announcement):
    512GB is CAD 1,129, EUR 779, GBP 649 or AUD 1,199. 1TB is CAD 1,349, EUR
    919, GBP 779 or AUD 1,429.
  • OS: SteamOS
  • Chip: Custom 6 nm AMD APU (Zen 2, 4 cores, 8
    threads, 4-15W)
  • Memory: 16GB LPDDR5
  • Screen: 7.4-inch 1280×800 HDR OLED, up to 90Hz. The
1TB model adds premium anti-glare etched glass.
  • Battery and weight: 50Wh, about 640 g. Valve quotes
3 to 12 hours of gameplay, depending on the game.

The Steam Deck OLED is now the only new Steam Deck Valve sells. The
256GB LCD model is gone, and Valve raised the OLED prices on May 27,
2026 (from $549 and $649), citing rising memory and storage costs. The
hardware itself hasn’t changed.

On paper it’s the slowest machine here by a wide margin, and its 800p
screen is the lowest resolution. What it has instead is the most mature
handheld software. SteamOS was built around this device, many games are
tested and labeled “Steam Deck Verified”, and there’s a large community
for troubleshooting. If you want something that works like a console,
the Deck still sets the standard.

The catch: It’s no longer a budget device, and its
2023-era hardware struggles more with the newest demanding games. Valve
has said a Steam Deck successor is in the works but hasn’t announced
one.

Standout: The smoothest SteamOS experience, at the
lowest price in this comparison.

Other models worth a look

ASUS still sells the two original 2025 models alongside the X20, at
their original prices, according to its October 15 press release:

  • ROG Xbox Ally ($599): AMD Ryzen Z2 A, 16GB of
    memory, 512GB of storage, a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz screen and a 60Wh
battery. It’s the cheapest way into a current Windows handheld, but it’s
much less powerful than the others here.
  • ROG Xbox Ally X ($999): The same Ryzen AI Z2
Extreme chip, 24GB of memory, 1TB of storage and 80Wh battery as the
X20, but with a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz IPS screen instead of OLED. If the
X20 stays sold out, this is the closest alternative, and it’s $300
    cheaper.

Who should buy which

Buy the ROG Xbox Ally X20 if:

  • You want Windows, with Xbox PC Game Pass, Epic and other launchers
    working natively.
  • You care about screen quality and battery capacity, and you’re fine
    with a $1,299 price.
  • You can wait for restocks or check stock often.

Buy the Steam Deck OLED if:

  • Your library is mostly on Steam.
  • You want a console-like experience with the fewest surprises.
  • You’d rather spend $789 than $1,299 or more.

Wait for the Legion Go 2 (SteamOS) if:

  • You want detachable controllers and the biggest screen.
  • You prefer SteamOS but want much more performance than the Steam
    Deck.
  • You can wait for Lenovo to confirm a US release date and final
    price.

Consider the ROG Xbox Ally X instead if:

  • You want X20 performance today and can live without OLED.

Not for you if: you mainly play older or lighter
games. In that case, the $599 ROG Xbox Ally or a refurbished Steam Deck
may be enough.

Windows or SteamOS?

This is the biggest choice you’ll make, and it matters more than
small spec differences.

Windows 11 runs nearly everything: Steam, Xbox PC
Game Pass, Epic, Battle.net, EA, emulators and desktop apps. Games that
use anti-cheat systems blocked on Linux will generally only work on
Windows. The downside is that Windows was built for a mouse and
keyboard. ASUS and Microsoft have added the Xbox full screen experience
to the ROG Xbox Ally family to make it feel more like a console, but
you’ll still see Windows menus and pop-ups from time to time.

SteamOS is a Linux-based OS designed for handhelds.
It boots straight into your Steam library, suspends and resumes quickly,
and runs most Windows games through Valve’s Proton compatibility layer.
Some games, mostly online games with strict anti-cheat, won’t run. Game
Pass titles aren’t natively available either.

If you like the SteamOS approach but want more freedom,
gaming-focused Linux distros like Bazzite can turn many Windows
handhelds into SteamOS-style machines. We covered Bazzite and other
options in our best
Linux distros for October 2026
roundup. Check device support before
you wipe Windows, and keep a recovery image.

Buying tips for late 2026

  • Check the price on the day you buy. Memory and
storage costs have pushed handheld prices up across the industry this
year. The Steam Deck OLED rose by up to $300 in May, and the Windows
Legion Go 2 has been repriced several times.
  • Watch for restocks, not resellers. The X20 sold out
quickly, but ASUS sells it directly. Paying well over list price to a
reseller is rarely worth it for a handheld that will likely be
    restocked.
  • Storage matters more than it used to. Big new games
are often over 100GB. All three devices support microSD, and the X20’s
microSD Express reader supports faster cards. For example, the SanDisk 256GB microSD Express card: Check price on Amazon (paid link)
  • Regional prices vary. Taxes and local pricing can
change the order of these devices. Check your country’s official store
    before deciding.

FAQ

What is the best handheld gaming PC in 2026? For
Windows, the ROG Xbox Ally X20 is the new top model if you can find one
in stock. For SteamOS, the Steam Deck OLED is still the most mature and
affordable option. The Legion Go 2 offers the biggest screen and
detachable controllers but costs more and its SteamOS model isn’t on
sale in the US yet.

Is the ROG Xbox Ally X20 faster than the ROG Xbox Ally
X?
Not by much. Both use the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme and 24GB
of memory. The X20 adds a 7.4-inch OLED screen, a redesigned cooling
system, TMR joysticks and a microSD Express card reader, for $300
more.

When will the SteamOS Legion Go 2 be released?
Lenovo hasn’t confirmed a new date. It was announced at CES 2026 for
June, but Lenovo’s US site still lists it as “Coming Soon” as of October
21, 2026.

How much does the Steam Deck cost now? The Steam
Deck OLED costs $789 for 512GB and $949 for 1TB in the US. The LCD model
is no longer sold new.

Can the Steam Deck play Xbox Game Pass games? Not
natively. Game Pass PC games need Windows. Xbox Cloud Gaming in a
browser is a workaround, but performance depends on your internet
connection.

Is the X20 still in stock? As of October 21, 2026,
it was listed as out of stock on the ASUS eShop, and Windows Central
reported it had sold out at Best Buy too. ASUS hasn’t announced a
restock date.
